Case Study: Cycling World Championships 2023 Glasgow

Co-founder Jim Bellinger was initially consulting for 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships and initiated the early discussions and development of the road race routes, especially in the use of the Queensferry Crossing (a motorway). The route across the Queensferry Crossing became the first time a motorway in the UK was temporarily closed to allow passage of a professional cycling race along it.
Once the Road Race Delivery Partner, Sweetspot, was appointed an opportunity arose to undertake the UCI Safety Manger course, at the UCI World Headquarters, in Aigle, Switzerland. Shortly after successfully passing the UCI Safety Managers course and test, a requirement for all UCI World Tour and Pro Series race organisations, Jim joined team Glasgow Life, responsible for the delivery of George Square and Glashow circuit elements of the road race.
 ATZ also supported the Fondo Road Race – Perth and Kinross and Time Trial – Dundee and Angus.   
 For the Fondo races ATZ supplied 50 moto marshals and two event controllers to cover 2 days of races. Day 1 was split into a Grand Fondo 160km route and a Medio Fondo 85km route, both starting and finishing in Perth. 
Day 2 was the Individual Time Trial, with a total distance of 22.8km, starting and finishing in Dundee.
 The team provided a combination of race escort, route safety and pilot duties across the Fondo World Championships.  
 ATZ were approached once the Championships had started on 3rd August to support the Individual Team Trial (ITT). It had transpired that a key stakeholder had issued communications to local businesses and residences of Stirling different information to what had been agreed during the planning of the event.
 The ITT event delivery partner realised the issue and the solution was to source a small moto team who could facilitate and manage access and egress on field of play during the gaps within the competition schedule. This minimised the disruption to the local community enabling them to go their business during the breaks in competition and the event could safely continue with the minimum of delays.
 ATZ provided, with just 5 days notice, a Moto Safety Team Leader and 7 Route Safety motos for the three days of competition. We liaised with the event delivery team, agreed the content for a moto briefing, recruited a suitable team and conducted a moto briefing, made the necessary accommodation and insurance arrangements to ensure the team were was prepared as possible, before arriving on site.  The event was successfully delivered and passed without any major access and egress issues.
